"Third Daughter" by Susan Kaye Quinn, just finished (yes I am immediately starting book 2: "Second Daughter"). I just know that when I reach the end of the trilogy I'm going to be left bereft because it is over, but I will not be able to stop myself from staying up all night to read. *Le sigh* Intrigued? Oh you should be, and you should now be searching on Amazon etc. for the trilogy instead of still reading my unworthy post. First of all if you enjoy SteamPunk, your little clockwork heart will tick merrily along as you plunder the depths of intrigue, goggles, new lands, skyships, oh my... The cool twist that I loved? The Indian flair (to quote the author, " BollyPunk"). 'OK, but I don't know what the this SteamPunk thing is", you're saying. You don't have to in order to enjoy the book (and I'm pretty sure it is safe to bet, the series as well). Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Romance, but nothing horribly mushy and even better? The characters aren't jumping each others bones every two seconds (I really am tired of that, in case you can't tell). Shhh, there is some good kissing.
Now go, go my friends and acquire the book. Read, enjoy, and then read the whole series.
BTW: The Mindjack series kicked butt too; but I waxed poetically about that series already. I just thought I would add a poke about the series for those who haven't read it yet (shame...).

Gene Cards by E.E. Giorgi
Sci-fi readers are you ready?! First off: pay attention, it really will get you ahead. I had some troubles at first with the story, I felt lost (as stated on Amazon, like I was a step behind). It was all user error. I was to busy trying to multitask, hey it normally works well for me (but NOT with a brain befuddled by fog). Mind focused + storyline racing = I cannot put the Kindle to sleep (nor myself for that matter but I am NOT complaining).
Horror no longer scares me, "sci-fi" scares me. Why? I say it often Dean Koontz terrifies me when he bases his books on future probabilities etc. and that is where the masterful Ms. Giorgi takes us, a very possible future. The characters grip you (Dr. Montoya is a favorite) and the story sucks you in, suddenly realizing you have now reached the last page. Wait, what?! But I want more Skylar, and yes more Yulia darn it. Yup, the story is done but it was a fun ride.
The hospital scene with Lauren hit way too close to home for me. I had to put it down as my heart cried and ached. I remembered my own mad dash (only 5 weeks ago) through a hospital racing to my Mom has she breathed her last (damnit, crying again). It is a scene that too many of us have played in our lives and it was well written. Kudos.

Second Daughter by Susan Kaye Quinn
I devoured this gloriously written tale; seriously I think my Kindle almost caught fire due to how quickly I was turning the pages. I am so terrified that there is only one book left and I will have to say goodbye to these characters that I have come to know and love.
Aniri and Ash (Prince Malik) are of course adventuring again, we wouldn't want it any other way. Aniri is learning to not only trust her heart but her love (I've been married for 24 years, trust me it is not an easy lesson to learn but it is one worth learning).
I was quite happy to delve more into Karan, and a few other characters (I don't want to give anything away). My favorite scene? Festival of Lights, I want to wear these clothes and attend this in person (cuz what was in my head was so breathtaking, thanks Ms. Quinn).
My dear friends and fellow readers, I have told you once to go forth and read First Daughter. I shall now tell you twice, and tell you to follow it immediately with Second Daughter. I promise a good ride.

Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight
Kate and Amelia Baron are a single mother- daughter team who has tried their hardest to make the best of being a teenager with a mom who is almost never home. Kate works hard to spend quality time with her daughter even if it can’t be a lot of time. Kate thought she knew her daughter until the day she got the phone call from the school. Kate races to her daughter school thinking that her daughter is about to be expelled, searching her mind for how her daughter could have possibly gone down this road. Kate arrives at the school only to discover that her daughter took her own life, jumping off the roof of the school. As Kate begins to question where her own life goes from this point forward she begins to discover that her daughter was keeping some very big secrets from her. Did Amelia kill herself or did someone kill her? The only way to find out is to retrace Amelia’s life and discover the secrets her daughter was keeping from her.
The story line and character development was intriguing and heart wrenching. As a parent of a teenager (multiple) it is difficult at times to come to terms with the fact that our children can lead completely separate lives from us that we know nothing about. My only issue with this book, and it’s a doozy of an issue, was the poor editing. There were too many times I had to reread a sentence to try and decipher its meaning and there is one paragraph in the book that I swear is just a mumble jumble of words. I know it isn’t just me because I read it aloud to my husband and he winced as well but alas he couldn’t help decipher a meaning. I by no means make claims nor do I have aspirations to be the grammar police, read my reviews I have a tendency to write the way I talk grammar be damned. I, however, am not publishing a book. It’s just a pet peeve of mine. I do come across a lot more of the spelling errors and grammatical mistakes in e-books. I can get over a few mistakes but not when they are at the magnitude contained in this novel.

The Legacy Human by Susan Kaye Quinn
Move over “Hunger Games” and “Divergent”, here comes the Singularity series. I could not put this book down; I had to plug my e-reader in to charge while I continued reading. Dinner? Ha, take out. Cleaning? A little dust never hurt anyone. As always Ms. Quinn paints us a work of art with her words that leaves us panting and wanting more. Her characters are always well developed, so much so that they can seem like family and friends by the time you finish one of her series.
Elijah is a 17 year old human boy; he can create exquisite paintings with one caveat. He can only do them while he is in a fugue state, it doesn’t make for a promising career as a Creative but at least he has a Patron. Elijah’s mom is ill and as they are Legacy humans they can’t get a cure for her cancer which the Ascendants have. Humanity ascended many years ago, downloading their “minds” to a database. Those that chose to Ascend can change body forms, have heightened senses etc. The humans that chose not to Ascend doomed their descendants to a life without Ascension; they come to be known as Legacy Humans. The only way for a Legacy to ascend now is for that person to win the Olympics in his or her Creative category. Eli desperately wants to ascend, if he does he can not only save his mother but perhaps he could even be with his patron Lenora and both women are dead set against his going. With the aid of Marcus, Lenora’s Second, and Cyrus; Eli heads off to the Olympics where he soon learns that the competitors will do anything to win, even kill. To win Eli must learn to harness and control the fugue state, his mother’s life depends upon it. Can he survive? Will he learn to control his gift? Will Eli achieve his greatest desire? You really must read this book. I suggest you so before it hits the big screen, because I honestly think this one is gonna make it to the movies and I personally can’t wait!

Apocalypse Weird: Immunity by E.E. Giorgi
Oh My God, seriously Ms. Giorgi thanks for the nightmare! She will make you afraid of the flu. I know, I know the flu? It sounds innocuous, but is it really? Sure we had the H1N1 scare and many recall the history of the Spanish Flu outbreak in 1918, this is not the same it is completely and utterly different. How so? Imagine it: you get sick with the flu, which as we all know sucks big time. Fast forward a few week and you’re finally feeling better, and BAM! You go nutters, complete psychotic break. You are out of mind, violent, and you go on a murderous rampage even willing to kill the ones you love. The flu that causes this pandemic? Why hello there H7N7, a zoonotic strain that finally crossed over to humans. The questions the scientists must answer are when did it start and what is causing the violence? Oh did I mention the nuclear explosion? Yup complete chaos let the fun begin boys and girls.
The government has set up an area in the desert with scientists to work on answering the questions of when and why, they have managed to keep the labs virus free. Anu is the lead scientist; she carries a lot on her shoulders. Her mother was an important scientist who committed suicide and the stain of her death has weighed heavily Anu all of her life, it is as if she feels the need to make up for what her mother did. Enter David, a computer genius he’s quite laid back, Anu’s polar opposite. David’s job will be to help compute the origin of the virus. Hey what’s a little romance during the apocalypse that is if they can get out of their own way to give it a try. Once the virus hits labs all hell breaks loose, talk about some intense action. Of course I hit that spot at bedtime. Guess who didn’t go to sleep? Needless to say I stayed up all night to finish the book. I then made the mistake of watching a show on Netflix (I watch weird stuff), a TV series called “How to Survive the End of the World”. And what was the first episode? A zoonotic virus that becomes airborne and wipes us out. No not the flu, rabies. So of course there was still the violence and add foaming of the mouth and it was freaky deaky. That night my dreams were night of unicorns and shiny things, oh no. They were filled with people coming down with the flu, going bonkers, zombies foaming at the mouth etc. You get the picture. Yeah I had to sleep with my stuffed monkey. Excellent Story!

The Presidents Club by FC Etier
I was so excited to be thrown in John Hixon’s world again. If I am ever in a jam, I want this man to have my back. Hixon finds himself embroiled in Thibaut’s business, this time protecting a group of men and not the man himself. If you read “The Tourist Killer” (the Presidents Club functions very well all on its on as a stand-alone novel, not many authors can accomplish that so kudos) you might remember Mr. Thibaut’s little jaunt to the Louisville Tavern where he passed an early evening gabbing with a group of older, and dare I say it, wiser gentlemen. Thibaut felt enlightened that night and based upon that he draws up an “Initiative for Good Government”. Thibaut promotes his Initiative across the country and has his men bring the group of guys into the circle, and as he does so Hixon’s special services are needed because not everyone likes the ideas set forth in the Initiative. As the story unfolds and the danger to each person increases the reader the reader learns that these aren’t your stereotypical “old men”, they are quite the characters. I absolutely got a kick out of these guys. You will get hooked on them, just can’t help it. FC Etier is quite talented at creating characters that leave you wanting more of them after you finish reading.
I was super happy and ooey-gooey over a certain romance (no worries, no spoilers). I was rooting for them in book 1. Seriously though Mr. Etier do you take your cues from George RR Martin?! Yes people, I yelled: “Nooo”, because you become invested in the characters and then yoink. *sigh* What’s the upside? If an author can make you care that much than it’s a good book to read, so go get it!
